Initially founded as Sri Meenakshi College, the institution was transformed into a university in 1929, making it the first private university in India. In 2013, the Tamil Nadu government took over its administration, and the university’s status was changed from “unitary” to “affiliating,” expanding its jurisdiction to include 81 affiliated colleges across four districts: Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, and Kallakurichi .
